Every year, the second full week of September is International Housekeepers and Environmental Services Week. This week is dedicated to recognizing the efforts of all types of hard-working custodial staff. Housekeepers work in nearly every industry from cleaning homes and office buildings to factories. They are essential workers and richly deserve this recognition.
Why 2021 is Significant
The pandemic really put housekeepers to the test. These workers had to continually put more effort than ever before into cleaning and sanitizing surfaces to help stop the spread of COVID-19 – and that’s if they were even able to keep working. The New York Times reported that 72% of workers had lost all their clients by the first week of April 2020.
While restrictions eventually eased, many companies never reopened their physical locations, leaving office cleaners with fewer customers. As more companies make a permanent shift to remote work, it will be harder for housekeepers and environmental services workers to fill those gaps in the future.
This year housekeepers really need and deserve our recognition more than ever before.
How to Recognize House Cleaners
Companies that employ custodial staff can recognize them in several different ways.
- Dedicate the entire week to activities that recognize these workers. Reward your employees with spa days, bring in lunch or host a game day.
- Finish off the week with a large awards ceremony to recognize accomplishments. Post photos and accolades on personal and company social media channels.
- Award your hardest workers with gift cards, flowers or personalized swag.
- Say thank you. A genuine, personal thank you, either said in front of staff or written in a card, is a sincere form of appreciation.
- Don’t wait until next year to show your appreciation. Your housekeeping employees should be recognized throughout the year.
Recognizing in-home house cleaners can be done in much of the same way.
- Greet and thank your housekeepers when they come to your home.
- Leave a thank you note for cleaners that stop by while you’re at work.
- Write an email to your cleaner’s supervisor whenever they do a great job.
- Ask your kids to draw a thank you note for your house cleaners.
- Smile and say goodbye to your cleaners when they leave.
A little bit of gratitude goes a long way and can really brighten up someone’s day!
