If you enjoy the feeling of a fresh, clean house, take pride in a job well done and simply love to clean, house cleaning jobs might be right up your alley. Residential housekeeping is a career that provides instant gratification where you get to see the rewards of your hard work in real time when you have the pleasure of creating a beautiful and healthy environment for your customers.
Housekeeper Jobs are Demanding But Rewarding
In the residential cleaning industry, the terms “Maid,” “Housekeeper” and “House Cleaner” are often used interchangeably. Regardless of what a customer or service company calls the people performing cleaning jobs, they all have similar essential duties. For our purposes, we’ll use “Housekeeper” to keep things simple.
So what does a housekeeper do? Housekeepers get rid of dirt, dust, grease and grime throughout a home using a variety of cleaners and equipment. Here are some of the cleaning jobs a housekeeper performs when cleaning a home:
- Scrubbing
- Mopping
- Sweeping
- Vacuuming
- Dusting
- Washing windows
- Loading dishwashers
- Taking out trash
- Making beds
You shouldn’t assume that cleaning services jobs will be perfect for you because you like to clean your house once a week. Housekeepers clean up other people’s messes on a daily basis, so you have to really love the satisfaction of getting a home fresh and clean for others. At times, you’ll be on your hands and knees, doing some light lifting, bending and a variety of other physical activities throughout the day. So, wanting to be fit or being in shape enough to be moving and working all day and having a knack for cleaning is a good foundation for starting a career in housekeeping.
You’ll be working in dusty conditions and often in homes that have pets, so if you have allergies, this might not be the right job for you. It doesn’t hurt to be an animal lover either! Housekeeping work can be tiring, but the rewards are numerous and you might find the opportunity for a whole new career.
What Are The Benefits of House Cleaning Jobs?
Most often, you’ll be working in teams. You have the pleasure of working with others toward a common goal. There’s a good chance you’ll build strong relationships with the other housekeepers on your team, and you’ll be part of a genuine team effort.
You’ll meet new customers regularly and have plenty of opportunities to impress them with your professional skills and your personality. Over time, you’ll almost certainly develop relationships with recurring customers and have the satisfaction of knowing that you are helping them and their families live in cleaner, healthier environments.
When you begin your housekeeping career, your love of cleaning will be your foundation for developing many in-demand skills as you learn the ropes and build your expertise. Here are some of the skills you can expect to learn:
Teamwork – You’ll learn how to work with others and help create an effective and efficient team. This camaraderie will make the work more enjoyable and give each team member a sense of group accomplishment.
Communication – From following a game plan for cleaning to relating to customers and co-workers in a professional manner, communication is key to becoming a skilled housekeeper. You’ll learn diplomacy, develop your listening skills and learn how to communicate effectively in a variety of situations.
Attention to detail – Professional housekeepers don’t merely clean — they develop an attention to detail for getting rid of as much dirt and dust as possible. There are so many places in a home that are hard to reach or out of sight, and these areas are notorious for accumulating grime. You’ll learn how to identify these areas and get them as clean as any other area in the home.
Leadership – Once you’ve learned the necessary skills to be an effective housekeeper, there are plenty of opportunities to grow into a leadership role. With focus and determination, you can go from team member to team leader and beyond. When you learn how to lead others, you’re developing a skill that is in high demand across a range of industries.
Are House Cleaning Jobs Stable?
The residential cleaning market is most popular in regions where the population has above-average wealth. This typically means the ideal clients are married couples aged 45 and above who hold college degrees with stable careers. But Market Watch reports that the cleaning services market should experience healthy growth of around 6.4% yearly through 2023, so the demand for house cleaning jobs is steadily increasing.
That’s one of the most attractive things about working in the housekeeping industry — the markets for cleaning services are almost everywhere. You aren’t limited to working in your current location or even in your state. You can find plenty of opportunities in desirable areas across the U.S. and Canada. To get you started, here are the top ten states boasting the highest housekeeper jobs salaries:
- Nevada
- Illinois
- Michigan
- Minnesota
- New York
- Wyoming
- Washington
- Utah
- Nebraska
- North Dakota

If You’re Considering Cleaning Jobs, Then You Should Consider The Maids®
Who is The Maids®?
Since 1979, The Maids® has grown into a leading residential cleaning company in the U.S. and Canada. The Maids® is a quality leader in cleaning for health, with more than 140 franchisees serving over 90 major U.S. and Canadian cities and the surrounding areas. The Maids® has established service areas in over 40 U.S. states and three Canadian provinces, with more locations to come.
The company was started by Daniel J. Bishop in his hometown of Omaha, Nebraska to bring residential deep cleaning to everyone. With four-person cleaning teams and a recognizable yellow company car, Bishop’s business quickly went national as he began franchising his residential cleaning company only one year later. Today, The Maids® continues to focus on our founder’s primary goal as we grow and improve our services.
After studying cleaning processes and their efficiency, Bishop determined that the most efficient way to clean a home is through team cleaning, and The Maids® relies on the team approach to this day. Bishop trained each member of his residential cleaning company to perform house cleaning jobs based on four primary functions:
- Dusting
- Bathroom cleaning
- Kitchen cleaning
- Vacuuming
In 1995, The Maids® became the first home cleaning service to clean for health, implementing environmentally preferable cleaning products and equipment. This approach to cleaning for health resulted in the development of our unique 22-Step Healthy Touch® Deep Cleaning System, which set new standards for quality cleaning and revolutionized the industry.
With over a quarter of a century of experience, The Maids® continues to research the best ways to serve its customers, get their homes cleaner and create the healthiest environments possible. We continue to stay at the forefront of the house cleaning industry and remain a model organization in the franchising world.

The Maids® Career Success Story
We wanted people considering house cleaning jobs with The Maids® to hear from someone who has built a career with us. We sat down with one of our successful team members who advanced all the way up to field manager.
What have you enjoyed most about your career path with The Maids®?
I enjoy The Maids® the most because of our system. Working in a team of four, you really get the job done quickly, and it doesn’t feel like a lot of work. As a field manager, I have a hand in the company’s development, and it’s exciting to be a part of the growth of this great company.
What experiences with The Maids® have you found most helpful in moving from the role you started with to the role you have now?
From the moment I started with The Maids®, I knew I wanted to be a team leader, and within six short months, I achieved that goal. Then, about five years later, I decided I wanted something more. I wanted to be a field manager. I watched a couple of them come and go, and I knew I would be the best pick for that position. I was already training new team members, but I wanted to do more for the company. So I found myself working hard at it.
I was actively engaged in problem-solving, trying to sell my own jobs and training new members, all to prove I could handle taking over the field manager position. Then a couple of years later, the opportunity came knocking, and the position I was working so hard for was mine. I was so excited, but even with all my years of cleaning experience and being a team leader, it still wasn’t enough to prepare me for this position. This great company I work for knew that and set me up for success.
The Maids® flew a colleague of mine and me down for one-on-one training. They sent me to some sales training seminars that helped me overcome my fears of selling. I have found working closely with other colleagues of mine even if they’re out of state has helped me in this role. I found locations that are going through the same issues or already had a similar situation, so it’s great to have someone to talk to and brainstorm ideas with them. Going out of town for growth seminars has been helpful and inspiring too. You come back from one of those trips, and you feel rejuvenated and ready to conquer the world again.
Which accomplishments or challenges that you’ve overcome are you the proudest?
Moving up from team leader to field manager, you’re always worried if your coworkers are going to stand with you in this new journey or flee. I must say they stood with me, and it was nice to see. The most challenging thing for me to overcome was my lack of experience with sales. It was easy as a team leader to sell my work because I know I can clean, so selling like that was easy.
But as a field manager, selling a job that I wasn’t physically doing was kind of hard at first. But The Maids do a great job providing me with the tools I need to be successful in this new position, including selling seminars, group training and one-on-one pep talks. But honestly, you just have to believe in yourself and your team and the selling part will be easy.
What would you tell a new employee looking to build a career with The Maids®?
I would tell them like this — I love this company. I have been here for ten years, and they care about their employees. The cleaning system is the best in the business, and I know because I have worked for other companies. I’m not saying it’s easy, but if you love cleaning and you’re consistent and patient, anything is possible. The right moment will come for you to shine. Believe me, because that’s what happened to me!
