You put “clean the house” on your to-do list, but did you overlook the garage? It’s one of the most used rooms in the home, but is often neglected and over-packed. Monkey Bar Storage knows that keeping the garage clean doesn’t have to be a huge project. That’s why we’ve teamed with The Maids to show you that by taking small steps daily, you can easily get the garage organized and keep it that way. Follow the steps below to get an organized, beautiful, and clean garage all year long.
Get Rid of the Excess
The first step to getting organized is to get rid of the superfluous stuff you have. Those small extra items that are used infrequently add up. See anything you don’t recognize or haven’t seen in so long you have slight feelings of nostalgia for it? If you haven’t used an item in more than one year—get rid of it. There are many options for donations and recycling, so you can’t use your carbon footprint as an excuse for hoarding.
Create a Plan for Organization
Preparation is the way toward prevention. Look at your items. Decide what you use most often. What is a seasonal item and which items would you like to keep out of the reach of children and pets? Keep the camping gear and family fun pool accessible in summer but store them high in winter when you bring down the ski equipment and holiday decorations. Once you make a plan, organization will be much easier.
Only Use Storage Items that Make Your Life Easier
There are so many items to choose from created to solve your unique issue with garage storage. Frequently used items should be kept within arm’s reach. Less regularly used and seasonal items should be kept out of the way on an overhead storage rack. If you have items you’d like to keep out of sight, or out of reach of children, try storing them in lockable cabinets. Having the right storage tools and receptacles make tidying infinitely simpler.
Quick Pick Up
Sometimes things tend to pile up, even with the best laid plans. We suggest devoting an hour a month to cleaning up messes that may arise–dusting or cleaning, or re-organizing the items you’ll use in the upcoming season. Put a longer session at the top of your spring cleaning list and do the heavy scrubbing when the weather is mild.
Don’t Forget the Floor
Let’s not forget the part of the garage that likely gets the dirtiest: the floor. If you’re looking for a flooring option that will stay looking clean, try an epoxy floor coating. The thick top coat prevents spills from staining the floor and cleanup is a breeze. Simply use your favorite cleaner and a mop to clear off any imperfections. Summer can be a particularly dusty time of year, so you may need to give the floors some extra love during this dry season.
Staying tidy year-round doesn’t have to be a dreaded activity. A plan and simple upkeep can give you the clean garage you’ve always wanted.
